Noralto Elementary School hatched a plan that has not only improved the physical activity and well being of the 4th and 5th graders they originally targeted, but has spread to over a hundred youth. They began with some nutrition education classes accompanied by the idea of initiating a walking club on campus. With high interest and support from students, staff, parents and businesses, a walking club began. The students who attend express that they like the walking club not only because they realize the health benefits, but because it is something fun they can do with their friends and it helps them do better in class. Not only have Ms. Early and Mrs. Cruz Avalos dedicated a day every week where they are out on the field encouraging students they have continued to solicit support for the waling club from parents, staff, the district and local organizations to support this important venue. In fact their efforts have inspired other local school districts to begin walking clubs as their sites.
Other partnering schools have promoted in school farmers markets to teach the importance of fruit and vegetable consumption.
