In the Grow
Beginning in January 2008, the Health Education Council has partnered with Sacramento Head Start, Folsom Cordova Unified School District, River Delta Unified School District and other early childhood sites to provide the In the Grow program.
The goal of the program is reduce childhood obesity and overweight among 0-5 year olds. This is accomplished through direct education, environmental changes and training.
**To request FREE In the Grow resources please click here. Early Childhood Curriculum Training Health Education Council staff in partnership with the University of California Cooperative Extension provide training to educators on nutrition and physical activity curriculum for young children.
Early Childhood Educator Professional Development Professional development events called Round tables allow educators to network, learn best practices and receive resources to promote and teach physical activity and nutrition at their sites.
Parent Nutrition and Physical Activity Workshops Health Education Council developed a 4-session nutrition and 2-session physical activity curriculum that teaches parents in an interactive setting the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity. Classes are taught during Head Start and other parent education meetings.

Lending Library Educators can reserve physical activity and nutrition-related materials from the Lending Library for up to one school year. The Lending Library provides educators with new resources and ideas to incorporate into the classroom.
Sprouts Newsletter for Parents Developed by HEC, the Sprouts parent newsletters teaches parents about seasonal fruits and veggies. It also provides child-friendly recipes, ideas for physical activity, and parenting suggestions.
Harvest of the Month Newsletter for Educators The Network for a Healthy California’s Harvest of the Month newsletter provides educators with information about fruits and vegetables, ideas for incorporating healthy activities into the classroom and ideas for physical activity.
In the Grow Toolkit for 0-5 Agencies
NEW! HEC has developed a toolkit with templates, training presentations, ideas, and resources for all the components listed above. The Toolkit will be available for purchase beginning in 2012. For more information, please contact Marcella Gonsalves mgonsalves@healthedcouncil.org .
