Promising Practices: Achieving Health and Social Equity in Tobacco Control
We need you. For every person who dies a tobacco-related death, there are many more suffering serious illnesses attributable to their tobacco addiction. However, the burden of tobacco use is not evenly distributed throughout the population. There are differences among population groups in morbidity and mortality from tobacco-related diseases and in quit rates resulting from evidence-based treatment; variations in exposure to secondhand smoke; and critical disparity in access to prevention and cessation programs. In fact, there has been an increased focus on identifying, addressing and eliminating tobacco-related health disparities in priority populations field for some time now.
We need you. A conference solely dedicated to showcasing practical, applied tobacco prevention and control programming for those living in poverty and the African American community is rare. Doing so by gathering professionals from diverse systems (federal, state and local governments, community-based organizations, researchers and healthcare professionals) is almost unheard of. The importance of continuing to identify, develop and share effective tobacco control strategies that address the specific needs of these communities remains high as the magnitude of the tobacco-related burden in communities of color and those in poverty continues to grow.
We need you. Promising Practices: Achieving Health and Social Equity in Tobacco Control, a conference presented by the Health Education Council's Break Free Alliance and the National African American Tobacco Education Network, will take place on April 27th and 28th in New Orleans, Louisiana. This conference aims to bring together those working to address tobacco-related health disparities and provide the opportunity to exchange and disseminate the latest research, information and practices in the delivery of tobacco prevention and control to priority populations. We anticipate approximately 200 people whose mission it is to improve the health of those most impacted by tobacco's harm to join us.
More specifically, the objectives of the conference are to:
- Provide a platform to exchange ideas and solutions to improve the health and well-being of the African American community and those living in poverty;
- Explore diverse and innovative ways of translating research into action;
- Inspire new and authentic integration of chronic disease and tobacco control programming within the African American and low SES communities;
- Identify the best strategies and practices to influence public policies and programs;
- Bring together public administrators, community-based organizations, researchers and healthcare professionals with a view to networking and learning; and
- To enhance the visibility of local and state tobacco prevention and control programming that is working in an effort to encourage replication and best-practices.
We need you. A successful conference will be one that allows participants to examine factors that impact on the effectiveness of tobacco-related initiatives for the African American and Low SES communities; encourages the transformation of practices and policies due to this new knowledge; and strengthens the foundation of those doing this work.
We need you. Strong, visible sponsors are critical to every conference and we believe that your organization's purpose and mission align with the goals of this conference. Please find attached "Sponsorship Opportunities" - a document that outlines the different levels and benefits of sponsorship of this important conference. Please take time to review this document and once you have determined a sponsorship level that best meets the strategic goals of your organization, contact me at thaase34@comcast.net so that we may secure your sponsorship request.
I look forward to hearing from you and please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns. Together we can eliminate the burden of tobacco-related health disparities and we look forward to partnering with you!
Sincerely,
Tamatha C. Thomas-Haase, MPA Public Health Consultant Thaase34@comcast.net
