Walk with Friends
Walk with Friends is a community-centered network of walking groups across Sacramento designed to increasing active living and social connection among residents by utilizing their local parks and walking trails.
Prior to the COVID-19 stay-at-home order, HEC coordinated walking groups in five low-income Sacramento neighborhoods, creating weekly activity experiences for on average 300 residents per month. Walking group members participate in regular health education workshops as well as a weekly free produce markets set-up after each walk and made possible through a partnership with the Sacramento Food Bank. Prior to COVID, 40,326 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables were distributed through Walk with Friends and jointly group members walked over 3,700 miles.
After the COVID-19 stay-at-home order, HEC transitioned the walking groups to the Zoom platform with walkers joining virtually through their phones while walking in their own neighborhoods. These walks were joined by people across the United States and provided walkers with much needed social connection during quarantine.
