Free Tax Preparation Program Removes Barriers for Community Members

For the second year, Health Education Council continued our partnership with the United Way, California Capital Region to host free tax preparation clinics for low-to-moderate income residents. This year, we hosted six clinics at two locations, the Mexican Consulate and the Health Education Council office, that helped 90 individuals and families complete their taxes at no-cost. Residents shared with us that they had previously paid for their taxes to be completed and appreciated the free service as it also helped them learn about tax credits that they were eligible for. The clinics were made possible by 20 volunteers and the HEC team who created a welcoming space, provided Spanish to English interpretation assistance, and ensured that all proper state and federal tax paperwork was filed.

The volunteers make a conscious effort to connect with the residents by understanding the neighborhoods and populations that we serve and helping residents feel comfortable and supported from the moment they arrive. Because HEC firmly believes that health and quality of life are influenced by many factors, we also offer residents additional financial, health, and wellness resources while they visit any of our tax clinics. “It was a priority for HEC to host the clinics in neighborhoods who face barriers and have limited access to financial wellness programming”, added Program Coordinator Randy Davila, who managed this year’s clinics. HEC is part of a larger network of organizations who host free tax clinics throughout the nation, however, was the only location this year in South Sacramento.

One resident shared with us that she felt the good vibes from the time she arrived, also feeling welcomed and encouraged by the staff. She also expressed interest in volunteering with HEC for future events. “The attention made this a welcoming and comforting environment. I would get nervous this time of the year because the CPA who was doing my taxes for many years would charge me $500. Here, I felt treated with kindness and noticed the professionalism. I will refer you all and return next year” added another community member.
