Career Exploration Program Puts Youth in Control of Future Job Prospects

In partnership with Yolo High School, the Community Safety and Economic Well-Being teams started the first HEC-led career exploration and readiness program, with about 10 students in total who participated. The 10-week program welcomed students who were eager to learn more about what it takes to pursue careers that they have long considered, while others learned more about career options. The HEC team guided students through the entire process; from deciding which careers to pursue, to learn how to budget once they begin earning income.

The first sessions had a broader focus, with conversations about their career options and exploring their current strengths and interests to help them decide which careers to consider. Two sessions were spent discussing resume writing to help the youth understand how to communicate their experience and skills. “The youth have skills that many employers are looking for, however they often worry that because they lack paid work experience that they are not viable candidates, but we worked with them to learn how to leverage their strengths and interests” added Program Coordinator Dion Cavin.

The students met professionals currently working in the industries that they are considering through two career panels. “It’s vital that the youth meet successful people to show them that they can achieve their career goals” added Program Coordinator Randy Davila. Lastly, the students participated in mock interviews for jobs that they would like to have. The volunteers who conducted the interviews agreed that the students were well prepared and confident. The program concluded with a workshop focused on personal finances and budgeting, which we encouraged them to incorporate once they are hired and begin earning a paycheck.

Thank you to Yolo High School for partnering with us to host the program and the guest speakers who motivated the students.
